Communication, Language and Literacy

In both small and large groups children are encouraged to extend their vocabulary, speaking with confidence and control exploring the meanings and sounds of new words.

Children are helped to understand that print carries meaning and in German, is read from left to right and from top to bottom. There are planning opportunities for children to become aware of languages and writing systems other than English. Sensitivity is shown to the needs of children for whom German is an additional language.

Opportunities are given for children to explore the structure of and take pleasure in stories, rhymes and songs, to listen with enjoyment and to create their own variations.
Children are motivated to attempt 'writing' skills, and to recognise their own names and familiar words.
